Thanksgiving weekend is one of the best times of the year for sports fans. Football is everywhere! The NFL has games on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Sunday. College football also has some of its biggest games of the year.

But there is one problem. You may not be able to watch every game you want.

Why? Because of something called a sports blackout.

What Is a Sports Blackout?

Have you ever turned on your TV to watch your favorite team, only to find that the game is not available in your area?

You may see a message saying the game is blacked out.

This happens because sports leagues sell the rights to show games to different TV networks. Some networks have the right to show certain games only in certain areas.

For example, if you live in New Jersey, you may have access to some New York and Philadelphia sports broadcasts. But you may not be able to watch certain games from Seattle or Dallas, or other parts of the country.

The same thing happens with basketball and hockey. It affects both professional teams and college teams.

Even when you pay for a sports package, you may find that some games are not available where you live.

Thanksgiving Weekend Is a Good Example

Look at the football schedule for Thanksgiving weekend 2026.

On Thanksgiving Day, you can watch the Chicago Bears play the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles play the Dallas Cowboys, and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills.

Friday brings another game, with the Denver Broncos playing the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sunday has a full schedule of NFL games, including the New York Giants and New York Jets.

College football also has big games during the weekend.

Now imagine wanting to watch a game between two teams from different parts of the country. You turn on your TV, but the game is not available in your area.

That is a blackout, and it can be very frustrating!
